Day 87 Loving Paekākāriki

Saturday 4 January Waikanae to Paekākāriki Start 9.30am Finish 4.50pm Distance 22km Total 1,626km (official trail distance but I have to go back and do the rest of the Tararua Range to have actually walked this distance)

Elevation: sea level all the way except a few sand dunes. Weather: sunny with some cloud, and a cool breeze. It was a lovely walk along a river and then the coast. The weather was warm but not too hot, and cafe eating available along the way. Even walked for a while with a TA Section Walker who had to come out of the Tararua Range from a different route because of the bad weather. When I commented on the lack of people I had seen she said there was a bubble of about 15 people a couple of days ahead of me. I'm very pleased not to be caught up with a group that large.

Kapiti Island at dusk

So it was a relatively leisurely day, which is just as well because I am so tired. I stopped at a cafe for a couple of hours for my go to meal - a Big Breakfast, followed up with an energy giving L&P. Walking along the beach you have full view of Kapiti Island. On my bucket list is seeing Kiwi in the wild and they have them on the island. An idea is germinating, but overnight tours to see Kiwi on Kapiti Island have limited availability, and I don't want to miss a weather window for the ranges. I will work it out tomorrow when I'm less tired.

TA hikers on the Kapiti Coast

My motel is lovely, the spa bath luxurious and Paekākāriki very cute. Strangely tonight I craved toast and jam so that was easy and cheap with a dairy across the road. I am so very ready for a rest day tomorrow. It's been 197km since the last one.
