Day 52 Stunning Rain

Saturday 30 November

Pirongia to middle of nowhere.

Start time 9.30am

Finish 6.40pm

Distance 26km

Total 842km

Elevation About 400m

Brilliant day. The first 16km was all road but I was loving my book and hardly noticed it. Covered the distance in less than 4 hours. Then it was across a mixture of farm land and bush. At about 3.30pm I sat down for a break and had a bit of a Nana nap. Felt re-energised to go further. I had no designated camp site, although wanted to get as far as possible so tomorrow would be a short day to Waitomo and I could hopefully fit in a tour of the caves as I haven't been there for years.

Early evening when I was starting to think I should start to find a flatish site, I could see the massive black clouds gathering. Fantastic photo opportunities - less fun to put up your tent in the rain.

Shortly after taking the photos the heavens opened. After about half an hour walking in the rain, which I love (I know weird), I thought I had better find a place to camp. Didn't take long. As soon as my tent was up and I was snug as a bug in a rug, it stopped raining. I'm right in the bush and I have a Morepork really close to my tent. Also a possum which sounds a whole lot bigger than it actually is - well that's what I'm telling myself.
