Day 25 Camping on a stranger's lawn
Sunday 3 November
Weather: Hot and sunny
Another day of mostly beach walking. It started with a 3km walk to the boat ramp to catch a boat ride across to Marsden Point. The first kms in the new shoes were uncomfortable so I did the beach in bare feet again.
At the end of the beach, it was some road walking to go around an estuary that was only possible at low tide. High tide was at 1pm so there wasn't any point waiting. I remained in bare feet as I crossed some grass off the beach before cleaning off my feet. Unbelievably I stood on a bee. Years of no bee stings, and now two in the space of three weeks. I took an antihistamine immediately and fingers crossed there will be no reaction.
After the beach was about 6km of road walking to Waipu where there was supposed to be a campground. Unfortunately it is now permanently closed. I was completely knackered and knew I couldn't do another 7km to the next accommodation at Waipu Cove. I tried a couple of B&Bs but they were full.
I put on my best smile, went into the local pub and asked the publican if there was anywhere to stay. He kindly offered his lawn in the house next to the pub. I wanted to hug him. So I put up my tent, and went back to the pub for a 1/2 kg of pork spare ribs. It was lovely.
